Keeping busy, hustle culture, the grind, we all know it. I call it the Productivity Trap. It makes us feel guilty, shameful, or behind because we spend time doing things that aren’t making us money or progressing our career. But that’s a sure path to burnout.
The US has a large emphasis on productivity and constantly doing things that lead to production or work. The term “toxic productivity” has started working its way into our discussions. Even places such as the Harvard Business Review (linked here) have begun acknowledging the issue. So how do we actually start taking the toxic productivity out of our lives and focus on taking care of ourselves again?
Unfortunately, for many people, the answer is rest. And I mean actual rest, not sitting on the couch thinking about all of the things that you have to do later that week. There’s lots of ways for us to start introducing rest back into our lives and they range from enforcing habits and boundaries at work to rearranging how our home lives look.
The next few posts will help by focusing on ways we can all start incorporating rest into the different areas of life. Do you feel like you get enough rest in your life right now?
