I have spent more than a decade fascinated with the languages spoken and used in daily life by people long since dead. One of my undergraduate degrees is in Classics, the study of ancient Greece and Rome. One of the reasons that I decided to pursue this degree is because I found myself wanting to understand the impact that these people and their languages have on our world today. My other undergraduate degree is in English, where I worked to gain a better grasp of the language I function in.
After graduation, I decided to go and experience the world and tried to immerse myself in the language and culture of others. Coming back to the US during the pandemic put me in a different situation and helped lead me to working in healthcare and gaining my master’s degree in social work. Now, as a therapist, I am all too aware of the difference my words make. Whether intentional or not, each of my words will have an impact on the person I am speaking with.
Words help to shape our reality and how we interpret the experiences we have, which is a big part of why they hold my interest. I have neglected my interest in words because of everything going on in my life (I wrote about that here!)
I’m not sure if this post had a point other than that this topic has been on my mind for awhile now. I hope you all find it interesting.
